When the gales of november come early

LET'S DO THIS!

On November 15, we’ll be releasing the new EP “Don’t Come Crying To Me” (available now for pre-order on Bandcamp). We released the single “Don’t Come Crying To Me” in April of this year and thanks to my super cool record label Rum Bar Records it got picked up by Little Steven’s Underground Garage with plays on the different shows on Sirius XM but also was in daily rotation on Little Steven’s Coolest Songs in the World. And then, starting on 10/29 (MY BIRTHDAY!) “I Don’t Want You Anymore” from the EP was added to the Coolest Songs station. And also thanks to the fabulous Malibou Lou, another single “Screamin’ White Jezus” is getting airplay on independent stations across the world.

Special thanks go out to Elephants & Flowers media for the extra help while we prep for the record release show on 11/22 at the Hook & Ladder. Here’s a fun interview with Ann Treacy (shout out to Heather Baker, too!) from Mostly Minnesota. I’m also so thankful for the support of the song “I’m Loaded” from my previous record, New Tricks, which has been added to a bunch of amazing punk rock playlists.

We’re sharing the bill with super cool bands Surly Grrly and the Spit Takes and the evening’s host is former Miss Twin Cities Pride, Gosh Alice Jones. We’ll have new merch-cds, stickers, t-shirts, koozies, AND I’ll also be selling my holiday song “Hey Santa” on Flexidisc!

I’ll be joining the Melismatics and other local luminaries at this Replacements Tribute show on 12/2/23 at the Turf Club, and then on December 8th, I’ll be joining Curtiss A for the 44th Annual John Lennon Tribute on the mainstage at First Avenue. Unfortunately, this year there won’t be a livestream, so I guess the pandemic is truly over. The best thing about the livestream was knowing that friends and family from near and far could experience the night. If you’re on Facebook, here’s a sweet video taken by Mark Engebretson.

I have the same birthday as Winona Ryder, Fanny Brice, and Randy Jackson of the Jackson 5 plus other fun facts

Which brings me to the fact that I’ll be 62 this month which I think is FANTASTIC! I MADE IT THIS FAR. Yes, it really sucks to deal with all the debilitating age-related effects of getting older, but it’s better than the other option. We won’t be playing on my birthday, but pretty close to it-a show on 11/4 in Aitkin, MN at the famous Ripple Center. It’s two hours north, and this historic venue has been hosting cool Minneapolis bands like Kinda Fonda Wanda, Creeping Charlie, and Eleganza! over the past few years. I’m super excited to see the place and feel very fortunate to be able to take the stage there.

AND DON’T FORGET THE RECORD RELEASE PARTY ON 11/22 AT THE HOOK & LADDER! We got The Spit Takes and my lovelies Surly Grrly to open!

And looking back-September was crazy! Our Palmer's show with Mad Mojo Jett and Green Bay's Holly and the Nice Lions kicked ass and we were able to give some big bucks to those affected by the horrific events at Nudieland. We played in Green Bay and Eau Claire with great bands-young smart punks Ditch the Hubcap and Julia Blair's project Dusk in GB, and Joe Gunderson's Foo Fighters tribute band Monkeywrench and the Jaggernauts in EC.

I then sang at three different events-the Big Star Tribute at the Parkway, the Do Re #MeToo Abortion Access Force fundraiser at the Parkway, and Rob Tossava's cancer benefit at the VFW. Then Jerry and I played as a duo opening up for Genevieve Hayward at the Underground Music Cafe. And I loved every minute of it.

MELT THE GUNS

Sorry for the late email this month.

On Friday, August 11, two men with guns attended a house show at the venue Nudieland in South Minneapolis and opened fire, killing one person and injuring many others.

The gunmen invaded a peaceful, loving and inclusive community and shattered lives-and the repercussions of their actions will reverberate for many years to come. My daughter Lulu is a member of this close knit group that organizes and plays house shows across the country, and her best friend’s partner was killed, and her friends (including one of her band members) were shot. My disgust for a country that allows the NRA to buy politicians who shape our gun laws knows no bounds. Our children are being killed right in front of our eyes again and again. Melt the guns.

On Sunday (9/10) I’m singing a song at the Do Re #MeToo Sexist Songs Reclaimed by Righteous Feminists also at the Parkway. This is a benefit to raise money for Abortion Access Force, an organization that supports abortion providers and works to increase awareness and action towards keeping abortion legal and safe.

On September 14, Jerry and I will be doing one of our duo sets to open for the coolest gal Genevieve Hayward who is an insanely talented songwriter and performer. We’ll be playing at the Underground Music Cafe and the show starts at 8P. Ukulele songstress Katy Vernon will open the show. I can’t recommend Gen highly enough-she’s wonderful.

I’m going to sing a few Pretenders songs with the Goo Goo Mucks (no, I didn’t get Entry tickets! Boo!) at a benefit at the VFW for MN Punk stalwart Rob Tossava on Sunday, September 17. He has been fighting a very aggressive cancer for several months now, and we hope to raise tons of money. Dillinger 4, Fret Rattles, and a host of other bands are playing.

Moving on to full band shows, we’re headed back to Green Bay on September 22 to play At The Tracks with bands DUSK and Ditch the Hubcap, then on to Eau Claire to play with the Jaggernauts at the Mousetrap on September 23. I LOVE THE ROAD TRIPS!

On October 7 we get to play with the freakin’ awesome The Von Tramps at the Green Room. I’ve been wanting to play with them forever and we finally were able to line it up! The Carnegies are kicking off the night and it's their first show in a long time, so be there or be square!

AND FOR THE FUNNEST NEWS OF ALL-we have our record release party scheduled and you are all cordially invited! We’ll be playing the Hook & Ladder on November 22 with two badass bands-Surly Grrly and Spit Takes-and the evening will be hosted by none other than Former Miss Twin Cities Pride, Gosh Alice Jones! Come join us!

We’ll be following up our record release show with an in-store at Barely Brothers on Small Business Saturday, 11/25. I’m breaking out the Santa suit again.

Be safe and love each other.

xoCindy

sAY DO YOU REMEMBER DANCING IN SEPTEMBER?

mORE MUSINGS.

Hi everyone,

Phew! It’s already August and the summer was a blur of shows complete with insects, rain storms, drum thrones sinking into the grass, road trips, drag queens, Jerry singing Cher at karaoke, and many cool and crazy people.

As I’ve said many times before, I just have to pinch myself to believe that my life has come back around with music. There was a time when I could not ever imagine playing again. And here I am - hanging out with Jerry, Dave, and Mark - three guys who never fail to make me laugh and impress me with their individual creativity and drive. And I’ve met so many amazing people-you among them. I am grateful each and every day for this gift.

I still come up against a few challenges-the arthritis pain in my hands is very frustrating. I’ve got a great “hand guy” who gives me STT injections twice yearly. They are absolutely the MOST FUN THING I GET TO DO. (Sarcasm alert)

In happier news, SEPTEMBER is going to be nuts-First, we kick it off with a late night show at Palmer’s on Friday, September 1 with the fantastic HOLLY AND THE NICE LIONS (Green Bay) and Minneapolis favorites (and RUM BAR records labelmates) MAD MOJO JETT.

We’re revisiting the Big Star tribute show with a performance on September 7th at the Parkway. Last year’s show was a great success and we hope to top it this year!

On September 10th at the Parkway, I’ll be singing at DO RE #METOO, an “evening of powerful feminists reclaiming the most misogynistic songs you love to hate — all to benefit the amazing work of Abortion Access Front (AAF).”

Jerry Lefkowitz and I will be doing a stripped down duo set opening for the insanely talented and groovy Genevieve Hayward (also from Wisconsin-I’m sensing a trend here, Ha!) at the Underground Music Cafe on Thursday, September 14th.

There’s fun stuff coming up for the rest of the year, INCLUDING A RUM BAR RECORDS RECORD RELEASE in November! Stay tuned for the updates.

Love you all-XO

PALMFEST 2023

An extreme amount of fun was had last weekend.

Thank you to Palmer's staff and all the amazing bands. It was a delicious sampler of all the cool music Minneapolis has to offer.

FIRST AVENUE'S ROCK LOTTERY

25 MUSICIANS, FIVE BANDS, 48 HOURS

Twenty-five Minnesota music artists can take a breather after working under a tight deadline.

In its first Rock Lottery, the legendary concert venue First Avenue drafted them into five bands Wednesday and gave them just 48 hours to create a set.

Boppin' (Like the Hip Folks Do)

I've been listening to pop music with willful obsession for decades. It's why I co-host a radio show, and the sweetly addictive nature of my obsession is why I write about singers and songs on (or not on) the radio.

And I'm still discovering new and new-to-me stuff all of the time. In the '90s, Cindy Lawson was in a group called the Clams. The Clams completely evaded my radar; I only heard them for the first time a few days ago. My belated discovery of the Clams came about because I stumbled across Lawson's swell "Let's Pretend" on a sampler album, decided to play it, and then felt compelled to find out about more of her work. Obsession in play! Cindy Lawson makes her TIRnRR debut this week. The Clams make theirs next week. - Carl Carfarelli (THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL RADIO dj and former GOLDMINE editor)

From 2023 (right about now, in other words) please enjoy legendary local hero Minnesota punkette rocker Cindy Lawson and her kick-posterior new single "Don't Come Crying to Me."

YMMV, but I hear a lot of Patti Smith in there, and more than a hint of the early (i.e. when she was still in Detroit) Suzi Quatro, but whatever influences you wanna cite, the above is as infectious and makes-you-want-to-jump-around as it gets. Let me be blunt: If I had stumbled into a show at some dive club years ago (or last week, actually) that resembled the above, I would have been hopelessly, embarrassingly smitten on the spot.

Honesty compels me to note that I was previously unfamiliar with Lawson, but she's apparently been in a succession of cool bands in the Minneapolis area for quite a while; the current batch she's playing with got together last year, when her album New Tricks, her first in a quarter century(!) was released on Rum Bar Records. That new song is from her forthcoming waxing, also titled Don't Come Crying to Me, which will be out any minute, also on Rum Bar. You can learn more about Cindy, not to mention hear (and order, 'natch) more of her music, over at her official sort-of-website HERE.

I should add that the gentleman playing guitar on the right in the video is named Jerry Lefkowitz. Jerry's a friend I've never met in person who used to be in a brilliant Minneapolis-area band called Something Fierce; I've written about them in these precincts a number of times, but if you missed those posts, here's a link where you can get the back story. And quite a story it is, trust me.

Hey Santa b/w MR. SCROOGE

REAL GONE

Back in the dim and distant past of the mid 80s, at a time when The Cars were still chart toppers and The Replacements hadn’t quite made the jump to a major label deal and fullblown melodies, there was a rock ‘n’ roll band called The Clams. That name has since been hijacked by a surf rock band, but the original Minnesota Clams were a great vehicle for garage rock riffs and massive hooks. A lot of people have only really caught up with them via the Rum Bar Records compilation ‘The Complete Clams’ (issued in May 2022), but it’s clear that decades after they disbanded, The Clams were a band with a huge potential. At the very tip of their musical iceberg, ‘He’s Like Heroin’ presented them like a huge-voiced, female fronted Stooges; ‘Give Me A Reason’ served up sixties garage pop loaded with bubblegum sweet melodic hooks and ‘The Dangerous Kind’ showed them dabbling with something much punkier, but with equally cool results. The Clams were a band that often sounded great, no matter what. Their vocalist Cindy Lawson disappeared off the map for a good few years after their disbanding, but made a much unexpected return to the US rock scene in 2021. Her counter vocal on a Beebe Gallini Xmas recording showed how much her voice had matured, but it still retained so much of its former sass and power, before Lawson’s own LP (‘New Tricks’, released in May ’22 alongside the Clams comp) showcased a hugely confident vocal curl on a range of power pop bangers that came with a strong root in mid 60s melodies. The album suggested that she was back in a very big way. Hot on the heels of that Rum Bar LP, this two track festive treat gives fans more of “the voice”, but if anything, Lawson’s natural coolness sounds even better here. When applied to music that aims to lift the spirits – first and foremost – but also supply a dose of yuletide nostalgia, it appears that she’s able to summon some pleasingly huge sounds. On the newly written ‘Hey Santa’, the clean opening chords and soaring vocal melody immediately hark back to the Phil Spector stable, providing melodies that are very broad, but they become much more indebted to the works of the Wall of Sound when a classic girl group groove takes a hold via a massive drum part and curly vocal. The 60s derived music comes strongly juxtaposed with ironic, modern lyrics about iPhone accessories and not wanting traditional toys, but nothing here ever leans on novelty. If anything, Lawson approaches each syllable with a great earnestness that sells the song, and by the time she reaches the chorus and drops in various whoahs that are clearly stolen with love from The Ronettes, this sounds like a modern classic in the old school mould. To hear it once is to love it. On the flip, Lawson and her band tackle The Orchids’ ‘Mr. Scrooge’, which they make their own with the help of another beefy drum part and well arranged harmonies. Although the lead vocal remains very strident, the more spacious and slightly slower arrangement immediately shows how it wasn’t written with Cindy in mind. There are a couple of moments where she wobbles on a broader melody, but reaching the second verse and beyond, and with a much higher register, she positively explodes, dominating another tune that calls back to the glory days of Gold Star Studios. That’s not to take anything away from the assembled band, though. This very natural sounding recording features some really cool bass runs, a hard edged guitar that’s just perfect for the role it’s given, and as previously suggested, a really taut drum sound brings a great amount of life to the recording as a whole. Xmas singles may only have a limited amount of stereo time every year, but the retro feel of these tracks ensures they won’t actually get old any time soon. This duo of 60s inspired bangers deserves a place on any festive playlist loaded with old favourites. In time, they have every chance of becoming part of your listening tradition along with those Brian Setzer LPs and that well worn copy of ‘A Christmas Gift From Phil Spector’. …And if, somehow, you’ve stumbled across this release due to a love of xmas related songs, be sure to backtrack and check out Cindy’s ‘New Tricks’ LP too – you won’t be disappointed.

REAL GONE

If it's too Loud

Cindy Lawson "Hey Santa"

Rum Bar Records have become our go to for killer neo-garage rock and power pop, and this year they've been killing it with Christmas singles. The latest (that we've discovered, at least) is Cindy Lawson's "Hey Santa." The song has a slightly updated take on 60's rock and roll holiday classics with a little bit of 90's power pop injected into it. It reminds me a little of Go! era Letters to Cleo with the 90's slickness cut back and the 60's sound cranked up.
